Hypnotherapy – It’s Like Tying Shoelaces

Hypnotherapy – It’s Like Tying Shoelaces

We all know, very well from our daily experiences, that what we do unconsciously, that is what we do without thinking about it very much, we tend to do very well or certainly very easily.

It’s not something perhaps we think about too often but when things are not happening in our lives like we would wish them too, when we are not getting the results we want, then we tend to examine our habits with a little more intensity.

So if you think a habit you have is one you would like to change then give some thought to the ability you do have, to make that change happen because in the past, you have certainly learnt many things that have been significant changes in your life and I suspect you barely give some of those changes or achievements even a passing thought these days.

As an example, as children we had to learn how to tie our shoelaces, and when we first started practicing, it was certainly a very difficult thing to do. For most of us, this task nowadays, as adults would seem like a most simple one to carry out successfully and that’s because, after practicing so many times, it has become something we do automatically and we no longer give it much thought, we just tie our shoelaces whenever they need tying.

However if you remember the learning process back then, when we consciously had to think of each step in the process, in the right order, with suitable co-ordination between each hand, the required level of finger dexterity, then all too soon we recall the levels of concentration it required along with the levels of frustration it engendered. Equally it soon becomes quite obvious that this conscious process, with its slow ponderous progression, once learnt, rapidly became an automatic unconscious fast process that remains with each of us to this day.

The same can be said for all of the tasks we do every day without really thinking about them consciously any more, cooking, driving, typing, playing a musical instrument, reading, writing, sports…if you practice any of these things, or anything else, regularly, you will get better and better at it until it too becomes an automatic fast unconscious process.

This automatic way of doing things occurs with our bad habits and traits as well as our good habits and skills. It is the way we are made, it is the way we live because it is the most effective way of living, because without learnt skills moving from the slower conscious to the faster unconscious part of our minds we would be forever burdened in our daily lives with endless scenarios exactly like the conscious shoe tying situation of our childhood.

The unconscious aspect of our mind doesn’t recognise what is right or wrong, what is useful or what is bad for us. It just knows learned behaviour and makes sure that those habits are protected and carried out in the most effective manner possible. The habits, good or less so, each time they are practiced create neural pathways in our brains that become stronger with each practice, therefore the more we practice or repeat the process the better we get at it, this means that anything can become our normal and preferred response, regardless of whether we deem it be positive or negative.

So when we use hypnosis and the trance state to change our thoughts, feelings or behaviour we gently by-pass the conscious part of the mind and communicate directly with this unconscious part of ourselves. By doing this we can make changes that are positive, seem effortless to achieve and bring about results in behaviours and feelings that we are pleased with and that we want rather than being trapped in a habitual re-run of unpleasant and unwanted results.

Therefore when you next want to make again a dramatic or as simple a change in your life as tying your shoelaces, remember to harness the power of your unconscious to make it happen more easily, more effectively and more successfully.

Experience Hypnosis For Free

Most people who have a belief that they have not experienced hypnosis wonder what it feels like.

Dave Elman in his introduction to his classic work “Hypnotherapy” says :

“If you will put aside all preconceived notions and examine hypnosis clinically, you will find that it doesn’t look, or ‘behave’, as you thought it would. the way it does behave makes this phenomenon a tremendously valuable medical tool, though misconceptions continually hamper or prevent its use entirely.”

I feel it is therefore easiest in this day and age if people simply take the opportunity to experience the positive reality of hypnosis for themselves rather than continue to make judgements based on hearsay.

I therefore offer a completely free 10 minute mp3 for you to listen to in the comfort of your own surroundings, do not listen to this mp3 whilst undertaking other activities just give yourself the chance to really experience the reality of hypnosis, and in doing so you might also discover as Dave Elman wrote back in 1964 that hypnosis “doesn’t look, or ‘behave’ as you thought it would”.

If after listening to the mp3 you would like to make use of the phenomenon to assist you in your life, read some of the articles elsewhere on this site or even contact me.

You can experience hypnosis by clicking here.

Hypnotherapy can help with physical conditions too

The National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) has published an article on it’s website about how hypnosis can help people with physical conditions.

It states in the article:

” It is a well-known fact that hypnotherapy can help people quit smoking, lose weight and get rid of unwanted habits but clinical hypnotherapy can also help overcome physical conditions.pain

For instance, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, (IBS) is routinely treated with hypnosis, and hypnotherapy is a treatment that is recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).

The National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) says evidence shows that over 60% of people show a significant improvement in their IBS symptoms after a series of hypnotherapeutic sessions.”

It continues on to explain:

” Some hospitals and GPs surgeries offer hypnotherapy as a treatment and people can be eligible for such treatment under their health plans.

Skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis have also responded well to hypnosis, says the NCH. Treatment for skin conditions will often be focused on visualisations of the problem behind the problem – like stress.

The therapist can teach a client self-hypnosis and other techniques for reducing this stress in their lives.”

The article also states:

“So what is hypnotherapy and how does it work? According to the Encyclopaedia of Mental Disorders hypnotherapy is a combination of hypnosis and therapeutic intervention in which the therapist leads a person to positive change while that person is deeply relaxed in a state of heightened suggestibility.

It is not one person controlling the mind of another. The client is not unconscious and does not lose control of his or her faculties. People will not do things under hypnosis that they would be unwilling to do otherwise. The person being hypnotised is always in control and decides how deep the trance will be, what suggestions will be accepted, and when to awaken.

Hypnosis, when using proven therapeutic procedures, can be a highly effective form of treatment for many mental, psychosomatic, and physical disorders, says the NCH. It is an evidence based therapy, with over 70,000 research references worldwide.”

The Owl & The Pussycat

It Can Happen

This week’s fum and gebra adjusted largepost is about how when people say to you, “ it can’t happen” or “ it’s never been done before” or “ that’s not what usually happens”.

All of those statements may have been accurate in the past, but they may only have been accurate because in the past you did not know differently, you were unaware of other possibilities or opportunities.

Each of us learns new things often once we have learnt them the way that we went about learning them is forgotten. Any struggles we may have had slip away, it’s almost as if the new skill has washed away those memories of the harder times of attempting to learn, the frustration of ‘getting to grips with this’ has gone with the mastery of the new skill.

Having once learnt something, it can then seem ludicrous if someone says to you about this skill that you know you have learnt, such as learning to write, drive a car or use a computer that “ it can’t happen” or “it’s never been done before” or even “that’s not what usually happens”.

In the past each of us knew less and could do less than we do now, using the same logic each of us in the future will therefore know more and be able to do more than we can do now.

By way of inspiration please look at the video here, it shows how the most deeply held ‘knowledge’ we believe we may have,  may actually need re-evaluating and updating so that we can truly believe within ourselves that “it can happen”, “it does happen” and wouldn’t it be wonderful if it became such that “it is what usually happens”.

Free Help ! What’s the catch ?

Free Help : what’s the catch?

‘Free help’ is sometimes understood by people to mean something the words do not say, it’s as if the immediate response is already programmed into the mind of the reader or listener to think ‘it can’t be true’ or ‘what’s the catch?’

Don’t take it personally if that’s the immediate ‘gut response’ you have, after all it’s taken you a long time & repeated episodes of learning and re-learning, possibly even the ‘hard way’ to be able to respond so instantly & completely confidently as you do. Congratulate yourself, you’ve learnt well.

This is just one of the many things you have learnt well in your life. Your instincts now are based are on what you have learnt through experience. In fact you are so good at learning that it’s now become ‘second nature’ or ‘instinctive’.

The question I wonder if you have thought about is “what can you do if you’ve learnt something over time so well that it is now second nature and you wish it wasn’t ?”

If you always react a certain way in a certain situation and you wish you didn’t.

If you always feel a certain way in a certain situation and you wish you didn’t.

What can you do about it?

The first thing to do is stop, take notice of how you feel and of what you are thinking and then relax.

Easier said than done you might say to which I would reply that you have already had to learn how to react as you do now so is it not equally logical that you can learn how to react differently?

In order to react differently there is a requirement for new episodes of learning and re-learning so you can learn to respond instantly & completely confidently in a new ‘gut response’ way.

This ‘new response’ can be achieved using the same skills you used to learn the ‘old response’. Your current instinctive response is built upon the habits that have developed from your previous thinking, not the thinking of let’s make a cup of tea or write a shopping list but the deeper thinking that happens in all of our minds, in the deeper parts of our minds, when we reflect on our experiences both consciously and subconsciously.

An important step in being able to re-learn or alter your current instinctive response is by being able to relax more readily and more easily, if you can do this then many things that currently cause you anxiety, tension or stress can seem significantly less difficult to cope with. If you can cope more easily then you are more likely to make better judgement decisions because you are making them from a position of confidence and security.

So returning to ‘free help’, which as you may notice is always freely available in the menu bar at the top of the page, in exchange for your email address, which I will be surprised if you told me you have ever had to pay for, and which equally I will not disclose or share to any other person, not solely because I am bound by the rules of confidentiality under the ethics of my governing bodies, but because I believe in honesty & integrity. So ‘free help’ is available, it is true and there is no catch you can download a free mp3 which will help you relax and re-energise yourself in 15 minutes, listen to it at least once a day for a week and then as often as you feel you need to.

You will notice after even one listen but more so after listening to the recording a few times, that at moments that previously you would have felt stressed, anxious or in a state of tension that your ability to relax will have increased.

The download is free because I believe in what I do. I believe sometimes that relatively small actions can be of significantly more benefit to people than may at first be apparent. I understand that not everyone is in a position to be any more involved currently in what I do than listening to a download and that’s fine. It really is, download and make use of the material as you wish to and need to, just remember you got it was given freely so do not put it to commercial use. When you do speak of it with other people and they say they would like a copy, do me a little favour back and direct them to the same link you got it from which can be either on this site’s menu bar or by clicking here.

This is a free mp3 that is for general use, it is you and your use of it that tailors it to your situation. I can of course work in a more personalised way on a one to one basis with you should you wish to, simply contact me to make arrangements.

In the meantime enjoy the recording and may it benefit you in whatever way you wish or need it to.

Hypnotherapy can help with the root causes of emotional eating

Hypnotherapy can help with the root causes of emotional eating

People do not always turn to food to simply satisfy physical hunger sometimes they turn to food for comfort, stress relief or as a substitute for other cravings. This type of emotional eating does not fix emotional problems. If you find yourself ‘thoughtlessly’ eating whole bars of your favourite ‘pick me up’ then you may be in a cycle of emotional eating. Emotional hunger cannot be filled with food. Hypnotherapy can gently and easily help you regain power over both your eating habits and your emotions.

If you think you may be an emotional eater have a look at this guide on the excellent www.helpguide.org website.

CNHC’s Professional Standards Authority’s Accredited Registers

“A youtube video will briefly explain it all”

The saying used to be that “a picture said a thousand words”, these days it would be more accurate to say that a “Youtube video will briefly explain it all” so in keeping with this new tip of the tongue phrase, which I am sure you realise is only of my making as I typed this brief piece, here is a 3 minute CNHC video to explain about the Professional Standards Authority’s Accredited Registers, which the logo to the right verifies I am on.

“..everything I thought it was going to be, it wasn’t like that at all..”

“..everything I thought it was going to be, it wasn’t like that at all..”

A lot of people say a lot of things based on “rumour”, based on “what I heard was..”, who repeat stories in the vein of “I knew a man who met a guy in a pub and..”. These can be excellent settings for the start of a comedy routine but are somewhat less helpful when used as the basis for making decisions that are important for yourself.

So today I’m posting a video, that even if you have no current intention of experiencing the benefits of hypnotherapy, I would ask you to watch, so that you can at least be knowledgeable. So when someone tries to tell you differently, you’ll at least know what someone said who has “been there, done that” because that’s what this brief video is, it’s an ordinary woman talking about the first time she went to see a Hypnotherapist. She talks about how it wasn’t like the ‘comedians’ had told her it would be, how it wasn’t like the stage hypnosis she had seen on TV and how it had been a positive straightforward experience.

In the clip she talks about some of the misconceptions she had about what it would be like, she speaks openly about how she was “scared because she didn’t really understand it” and how those fearful feelings were unfounded. She talks about how she was actually “in complete control” all of the time, how she was perfectly able to say “yes, no, a full sentence even” at any time and could even have “walked out of the room” had she wanted to.

She explains clearly how she felt before, during and after the experience and it makes for an interesting and educating watch. It won’t take you 10 minutes to become better informed, click on the clip below to discover how “..everything I thought it was going to be, it wasn’t like that at all..”.

The workings and consequences of stress

The workings and consequences of stress

This is the first post on the Deeper Further Better Blog that will be updated with articles and features relating to Hypnotherapy, NLP and HSF.

This first feature is about how stress affects the body and is presented by Sharon Horesh Bergquist in a TED-ED animation that explains the workings and consequences of stress as well as the effects it has when experienced over the long term and/or repeatedly.

The video gives only the broadest advice on reducing stress but it is well known and documented that hypnotherapy is an excellent method for people to use as a safe and drug-free way of reducing their personal levels of stress or anxiety. Anybody who has experienced hypnotherapy will confirm that it is an extremely relaxing process and certainly one that is beneficial to someone who is experiencing the ill effects of excessive anxiety or stress.

Qualified hypnotherapists are trained in various methods for assisting with stress and anxiety so do ask your hypnotherapist what methods she/he recommends, in the meantime watch the entertaining and educational brief video courtesy of TED.
